Difference between Biochar and Charcoal Production Process
While both Biochar and Charcoal utilize pyrolysis in their production, their core production objectives, overall process control, reaction conditions, and post-processing are completely different. This is the key difference between the two types of charcoal, directly determining the differences in the physicochemical properties and functions of the finished products.
Charcoal Production Process
Charcoal production aims solely at achieving a high calorific value. The production process is extensive, focusing on retaining combustible carbon and minimizing production losses. Production is primarily conducted in open, simple kilns with low oxygen control precision and an unstable pyrolysis environment.
Charcoal undergoes a shorter pyrolysis time, requiring only the carbonization and shaping of the woody raw material. The production process intentionally retains a large amount of volatile combustible components to maximize the calorific value of the charcoal.
Charcoal undergoes no post-production modification or activation. The finished product contains more impurities, has a loose carbon structure, and is easily oxidized and burned, only meeting the requirements for fuel use.
Biochar Production Process
The biochar production process is standardized, refined, and controllable, with strict management of all parameters throughout. The biomass carbonziation plant precisely controls the oxygen-deficient environment, preventing excessive oxidation.
It employs a slow pyrolysis process, resulting in more complete carbonization. This production process significantly increases the proportion of fixed carbon. Biochar can be stored for extended periods in soil and aquatic environments.
