Sludge Pyrolysis: Low-Carbon Solid Waste Disposal

September 29, 2026
With the acceleration of global urbanization and the large-scale expansion of the wastewater treatment industry, the volume of municipal and industrial sludge generated has surged year by year. Traditional sludge disposal methods—such as landfilling, incineration, and composting—are increasingly incompatible with global "dual-carbon" goals. Sludge pyrolysis technology offers key advantages, including the harmless treatment, volume reduction, and resource recovery of solid waste. It has emerged as a mainstream technology in the global sludge disposal sector, driving the industry's transition toward green and low-carbon operations.
Henan Mingjie Environmental Equipment Co., Ltd
Continuous Pyrolysis Solution for Sludge Disposal

Mingjie sludge carbonization plant utilizes continuous pyrolysis technology to convert sludge into biochar and syngas. The continuous pyrolysis carbonization process is essentially a thermochemical conversion in which dried sludge is continuously heated in an oxygen-free or oxygen-deficient environment, causing its organic matter to decompose into gas, liquid, and solid phases.

The primary product of the continuous carbonization plant is sludge biochar, with syngas recovered as a secondary product. The solid biochar features a highly porous structure, strong adsorption capabilities, and stable heavy-metal immobilization, making it highly valuable for resource utilization.

The continuous carbonization plant enables stable, 24-hour operation with high processing capacity and uniform temperature distribution. The resulting biochar is of consistent quality, making the system ideal for large-scale municipal sludge disposal projects.

The syngas generated during pyrolysis is collected and combusted to release heat. High-temperature flue gas passes through a heat exchange system to recover waste heat, which is then redirected to supply heat for the sludge drying and carbonization reactors. This creates a self-sufficient energy system that significantly reduces operational energy consumption.

Small amounts of exhaust gas generated during the process are treated via an integrated purification system—featuring dust removal, rapid cooling, desulfurization, denitrification, and deodorization. The resulting emissions surpass environmental standards, ensuring no secondary pollution.
